    ARTS CREATIVE COMMUNITY

Over the past decade, Chippendale has emerged as Sydney’s newest mecca for art, photography and crafts. Its historic warehouses and factories provide idyllic venues for art galleries, furniture showrooms and design studios, while its tiny cafes and tearooms provide the perfect respite for weary feet as you meander from gallery to gallery. Here are a few of the area’s hidden gems, which make Chippendale such an exciting place in which to live, work or explore…

White Rabbit Gallery | 30 Balfour Street, Chippendale | Located in an old knitting factory, White Gallery showcases one of the world’s most impressive collections of 21st Century Chinese art.

NG Art Gallery | 3 Little Queen Street, Chippendale | A stunning gallery that specializes in Australian contemporary art, NG Art hosts monthly artist dinners and workshops, and is based in an old Victorian Gothic recital hall.

MOP | 2/39 Abercrombie Street | MOP is an artist-run gallery supporting young and emerging Australian artists.

UTS:Gallery | Level 4, 702 Harris Street, Ultimo | As part of the University of Technology Sydney, UTS:Gallery showcases the work of graduates, staff, students and guest artists

CarriageWorks | 245 Wilson Street, Eveleigh | Based in the old Eveleigh Railway Yards, CarriageWorks describes itself as “a new home for contemporary arts and culture in Sydney”. The venue hosts theatre performances, art festivals and weekend design markets.

FraserStudios | Kensington Street, Chippendale | Based in three warehouses on Kensington Street within the Central Park development site, FraserStudios is an affordable art and performance space managed by Queen Street Studio. FraserStudios is an initiative of Frasers Property, a proud supporter of the project.

From March 2011 the Central Park site will become a gallery in its own right, as it hosts A.I.R. 'Artists in Residence' is a temporary public art project involving 4 groups of artists commissioned to imaginatively transform the heritage Brewery Yard buildings and brick stack, step by step throughout 2011.
